This is something I have meant to do for a long time. Why didn’t I? Before I answer this question, let me back-up a little and tell you what led me to this point.

From time to time I would go online and search for the “3rd Company of Commandos of Mozambique” my army unit hoping I would find some information or a site, but my searches were in vain.

That was until back in November of 2008 when I finally found the official site: http://3ccomandosmocambique.multiply.com/

The site is on “Multiply” a social network similar to “Facebook”, so I registered and created my own site and intended to add my army pictures. However, when I created my profile I only added one of my pictures which I had in “My Pictures” folder in my Laptop, but because I didn’t have any of my army pictures in digital format, I could not add them.

About a month later (during the 2008 Christmas holidays) I finally got around to gathering all pictures which my wife had grouped in 2 albums and scanned them into “My Pictures” file.

However, after scanning the pictures and naming them I didn’t upload them immediately and I guess one thing lead to another and I sort of got distracted and busy with life in general and never got around to posting them to my “Multiply” site.

Anyway, finally I decided that it was time I got it done, so today was the day. I uploaded all the pictures that I have, so if you would like to see pictures of me while in the army go here: http://tonyalves.multiply.com/photos/album/1/Army_Photos

His goal was to start his own business again. As I am sure you have heard, anybody who has ever achieved financial freedom on his or her own, if they loose it all, know exactly what it takes to get it all “back” again.

My Grandfather was no different. It took him only a few years of hard work to save enough money to get his own business started again. And in no time, they were financially independent once again.

Their son had grown and had become a fine young man. During his teenage years, they enrolled him in the Military Academy. This was very expensive, but it was a thing the rich did at the time.

The Military Academy was a place for getting an education and at the same time learn respect, discipline, etc. The downside though was that the boy grew up without having to work for a living and when he finally graduated, work was not something he was accustomed to. As you will see, this became a huge problem as he got older.

It was at this time that they decided to take a trip to visit their old country of origin and to see the relatives they had left behind around 30 years earlier. They also hoped that the trip would somehow change their son from being a spoiled young man to a man who appreciated the things in life that he took for granted.

My Grandfather had a business partner, so he left his partner in charge of all his business affairs and took the trip which at the time was a sea voyage that took about two weeks.

The year was 1947 (or perhaps 1946) when they arrived in Lisbon. They travelled to the far north where they were from. Actually my Grandmother was from a place close to a fairly large city about two hundred kilometres north of Lisbon called Coimbra where the only University of Portugal was at the time.

My Grandfather was the one who was born in the far north. I am not sure if they stopped in Coimbra to visit my Grandmother’s relatives or not, what I know is that they settled in the far north.

Everything was going as planned, but then the unthinkable happened.

He worked hard and slowly grew his business. In the meantime they had a baby boy. Life was good, money was not a problem so they decided to hire a “live in” babysitter to take care of the baby.

My grandfather had a soft heart, he always helped those who came to him for help. Unfortunately he didn’t know when to say no, so soon the word spread and his friends, neighbours and their friends came to him for help.

They kept on coming and because most of these people didn’t pay him back, he started borrowing money to keep the business going. However, he got so deep in debt that he was not able to survive.

When the creditors started threatening them, they feared for their life, so they could not do anything other than flee to the mountains with the only thing they still had, their own child.

This went on for days, weeks and perhaps even months. He tried to win her attention, but if she had any interest in him she surely was not showing it.

It was said that he became “love sick” and started loosing weight. Eventually he got so sick that he could no longer get out of bed.

At this point a third party got involved and contacted the girl to let her know how serious the boy’s condition was getting and asked her to at least speak to him.

Once in Brazil, one of them became a maid, the other a delivery boy. The boy delivered fresh bread very early in the morning. This is how he met the girl who was the maid at one of the houses he delivered to.

These two people were my father’s parents and obviously were my grandparents. There were also my mother’s parents, but their life didn’t make as much impact in my life as my father’s parents did.

My mother’s father actually died when she was a teenager. Her mother though lived to a very ripe age of over 80 (it might’ve been over 90 I am not sure) but she lived in her house in farming county all her life, so there is not much to tell about her.

From this point on, when I refer to my grandparents, I mean my father’s parents.
