What are Exotic Cars?

Well, the definition here is a bit hazy. Most people think of Exotic Cars as those expensive and rare vehicles owned by collectors and the very rich. Classic cars preserved or restored at great expense are also called Exotics by some Car Enthusiasts. The real truth is that the definition of Exotic is largely left to the opinion of the owner.

Here is a somewhat broader definition of Exotic Cars also known as Supercars. Exotic Cars or Supercars are rare High Performance, hand made cars as well as some production High Performance Cars where low quantities are manufactured. These Cars have powerful High Performance Engines and are built to be raced however, they are also made to be driven on the street. All of these Cars are considered to be street legal anywhere in the world.

Have you ever pulled up to a stop light minding your own business and the most incredible car pulls up quickly stopping next to you? Then, after staring at the car and then being caught by the driver, you can’t help but wonder what is that? Well “that” is most likely an Exotic.

Unless you live in L.A., Miami or any other such place in the world where the rich gravitate to, the chance of seeing an Exotic Car pull up beside you at the stop light is very slim. In most places in the world, if you want to see Exotics, you will have to go to a Car Show. Invariably you will see some of these Cars among the mass production low end everyday drivers on display.

Even in the type of economy we are experiencing where many of GM, Ford and Chrysler dealers twist in the breeze awaiting news of a bailout, Exotics are a tiny sliver of the automotive market that always has been and always will be inflation, recession and panic-free. In fact, at a time the big three of North America are announcing Dealership closings, Lamborghini just opened up another new Dealership in L.A.

Few of these Cars are sold to someone as their only vehicle. Indeed, a Ferrari California, a Lamborghini Diablo, or a Mercedes SL65 Black Series are probably not just a second or third vehicle in a household, but 5th or 6th. These Cars are purchased by Car Collectors or by the very rich as symbols of status. Many of these Cars after being purchased, are driven to a garage where they just stay parked for weeks, months, or even years at a time and are only driven occasionally.
