Define “Affiliate”…
An affiliate is someone who promotes a product and gets paid a commission when he/she sells it. It’s much like a regular commission based sales person except this is much better because you don’t have to go knocking door to door and there are no sales presentations to pitch and no recruitment is required. An affiliate is like a field rep, only it’s not as tough a job.
Essentially, an affiliate reviews products/services and tells people about the practicality, usefulness, and effectiveness of the product or service on his/her website or email. This if done properly, will entice the prospective buyer to purchase the product or service.
Besides product reviews, an affiliate can use a number of different ways to do their promotions. They can advertise on their own website, by email, by placing ads on classifieds or use pay per click, etc. Products or services owners usually provide banners, text ads, links, and other creatives for affiliates to promote.
All of these are provided with special codes embedded, so when a prospective customer clicks on them and purchases the product or service, the affiliate gets paid a commission.
Even though it’s still possible to make a living online as and affiliate, affiliate marketing is not as easy as many “Gurus” would like you to believe, so beware of the “hype”. It’s becoming increasingly difficult to be a successful affiliate, due to the growing number of affiliates starting online everyday.
