2010 Canadian International Auto Show
It was no surprise to anyone that the 2010 Canadian International Auto Show was a bit smaller than it was in 2009 which in turn was smaller than in previous years. This was expected due to the downturn of the economy which has been severely affecting the automotive industry since 2008.
The Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto follows the Detroit Auto Show which is known for being the showcase for smaller, more fuel-efficient cars, electric vehicles and hybrids. Even though this turned out to be true this year, history has shown us that evolution in the auto industry happens at a very slow pace.
This is a trend that has been steadily changing in the last few years. Due to the recent recession and the competition of smaller more fuel efficient imports, the North American car makers have been aggressively developing more fuel efficient vehicles including hybrids and other “green” energy alternatives. This was evident in the 2010 Canadian International Auto Show.
All North American automakers had their innovations on display, but Ford set itself apart from the competition by having the largest floor display showing the largest number of vehicles. It was also the automaker showing one of the largest selections of energy efficient and environmentally friendly vehicles.
Among these was the “Volt”. The Volt’s power source is electricity. It has a range of 40 Miles with it’s batteries fully charged. Besides the batteries it also has a gas powered electrical generator. When the batteries are depleted, the generator kicks in and provides additional power. This keeps the “Volt” going for as long as there is gas to run the electrical generator. This gives the “Volt” a range of several hundreds of Miles.
